New find in Harrisonburg: Black Forest German Restaurant

Yes, the Serendipity Riders strike again. Only thing is that we were in the truck, not the motorcycle. We were sitting at a stoplight on Market Street in H’burg, on the way to Red Lobster, when I looked out the window, and saw “German Restaurant.” Now, having had a discussion on spetzle and the Bavarian Chef Restaurant in Madison (which will be subject of a future post), this sounded much more appealing than Red Lobster, so we pulled in.

Black Forest has only been around for 5 weeks, no ABC license yet, the decor is sparse, music is German pop. That being said, the food is worth it. I had the hand-breaded fried pork with mushroom gravy, spetzle, and fried potatoes. Gary had the hand-breaded fried chicken with the spetzle. Large portions, the slices were thin but filling, not too much breading. Wow. And I would never have thought about balsamic vinegar over steamed broccoli, zucchini, and carrots, but it worked. No dessert, because we were stuffed.

Gary also had the apple juice with soda water, a tribute to a childhood memory. We’re going to have to go back and try the rest of the menu. Now if they only had veal wiener schnitzel.
