Eating my way through Florence, AL–or how to maintain a stylish figure now that I’ve retired

Being retired is a bad thing. Being a foodie with a curious bent is even worse. Put the two together, and you have me. So where have we been to eat in Florence, you ask?

Well, for starters: we have Newbern’s, about which we wrote a post last year when we first ate there.

This year, since I moved down here with Evangeline, ahead of my other half, we discovered Evergreen Chinese Buffet and Mongolian Grill and Buffet (the former is our go-to for Chinese carry-out or sit-down, the latter for sushi all-you-can eat-but-don’t-get-too-excited-about-it). We have your standard fast-food places like Sonic, DQ, Hardee’s, KFC, McDonald’s, and the casual dining places like Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Shoney’s, and Golden Corral, so if we need that fix, we know where they are. Oh, by the way, thank goodness we have a Five Guys!

After Gary retired and we made the final exodus from NoVA/DC, that’s when the fun began. Sure, we had the holiday and special occasion dinners at CR154 (chez Jane B.), but we discovered the one-location hole in the wall places (or in some instances, three-location places) that were worth a look-see and taste.

Garden Gate
El Pollo Loco
Casa Mexicana
La Hacienda
Taqueria Juarez
Fiesta Mexicana
El Charrito (now closed)
Rosie’s Mexican Cantina
306 Barbecue
360 Grille
Stell’s (over the river, gasp!)
Oh Bryan’s (also over the river)
Palace (again over the river)
Bunyan’s BBQ
Brooks Barbeque
Momma Jean’s
Mongolian Grill and Hibachi
Papa Murphy’s Pizza

I will be writing individual posts on these in the future (and adding names to the list as I remember or as we visit)…and hopefully get back on the blogging wagon!
